So I guess I'm just interested in hearing other people's opinions, why do people find the first Paranormal Activity so scary?Įdit: Thank you all for the answers! I'm not trying to have my mind changed or change anyone else's, but it was cool to see why this movie works for a lot of people when it didn't for me and I'm glad I got to discuss this. I do like the movie better now that the series has gone on and expanded on the lore, I think it works very well with the other films in a marathon as like a mid-way cool down, but on it's own its just boring to me. ![]() ![]() The ending sets up that it actually is a very powerful and threatening entity, but the movie does nothing to show this prior to it other than the characters telling us we should be afraid. I just think the movie needed more going on because the demon felt so non-threatening until the very conclusion of the film. It wasn't jumpscares but it was the first time in the series Tobi felt like it could possibly hurt them (again, excluding the last like five minute of the first movie where they shoehorned in that this demon who's done nothing all movie is suddenly murdering people and taking Katies body). The demon actively put this child in a dangerous situation for a change, and even though nothing happens to the baby, knowing that the sister couldn't get to him if it did is what made the scene suspenseful. It's threatening not because a demon locked her out, but because now there's a baby alone inside the house which anything can happen to. The second movie suffers from this as well, however the daughter at least had some stuff happening to her like being locked out when babysitting. I'm not saying jumpscares either, I don't like when movies are nothing but jumpscares, but just something more than the wind demon moving a door back and forth. But telling me it's a demon and not a spirit and that I should be afraid doesn't change the fact the demons doing nothing scary. Instead, give me a reason these characters actually feel in danger. You shouldn't have so little faith in your own movies villain that you have to write in a character to tell the audience they need to be scared of it. Don't tell me I should be afraid of this thing, give me a reason why. And to make it worse, when nothing was happening they had a guy come in the house and tell us it's not a ghost it's a demon and that's more dangerous. choosing not to for some reason? Tobi can possess Katie every night and just stops in the morning because (no explanation given) and can damage things in the real world, start fires, move objects, throw things, etc and chooses to mostly only move a door back in forth when people are sleeping at can't see it because (no explanation given for this either). ![]() Like that scene tells us the demon can do more than move doors and is just. Then the demon does nothing with fire for the rest of the movie so both these things were pointless (though the as kids stuff would be relevant in later films). The only thing I can really remember Tobi doing (prior to the very very ending) was setting the Ouija board on fire. I remember that being 90% of the runtime was her at 10x speed rocking over him while he slept. The entity in the movie pretty much moves doors back and forth and possesses Katie because he thinks Micah is cute and wants to watch him sleep (what does the demon gain from this? Like Tobi has no reason to want to do this lmao). I'm not talking about the series as a whole, but the first movie felt like there was no threat. Why do people consider the first Paranormal Activity such a good and scary movie.
